Diamonds are graded according to the four C's: Carat, Cut, Colour
and Clarity to determine the value.
Carat

The weight of a diamond is expressed in carat. Five carats is equal to one gram. The word carat originated from a natural unit of weight, the seeds of a coral tree. One carat is divided into 100 points. A 50 pointer diamond equals a half carat.
Diagram 2
Cut refers to the symmetry and proportions of a stone. If a diamonds proportions are correct light is reflected internally from one facet to another and then reflected towards the table of the stone to give an excellent sparkle.
At the bottom of the price scale are the badly cut stones. If a stone is un-mounted it is easy to examine for proportion. If a diamond is cut too Deep, light escapes downwards and the stone would not sparkle. A very shallow cut results in a low luster or sparkle diamond because light disappears through the base causing the diamond to look dull. See diagram 2
The two different types of diamond shapes are Round Brilliant and Fancy Shapes. The most common cuts in Fancy Shapes are: Oval, Marquise, Pear, Heart and Emerald. Larger Fancy Shapes are less expensive than Round Brilliant cut diamonds.
Diamonds are graded according to the degree of clarity, the finest being called flawless. Most diamonds contain minute traces of non-crystallized carbon known as inclusions not visible to the naked eye but need to be inspected under a microscope or a loupe. Diamonds are unique because of their fingerprints caused by nature. The less inclusions, the better the quality and more valuable the stone will be. A diamond is called loupe clean if after examined by a grader with a 10 x loupe has been found free of internal characteristics.Diamonds which just fail to be of the highest clarity are internationally referred to by dealers as VVS which means a very, very small inclusion.Next down the scale of clarity is VS meaning very small inclusion then SI small inclusions. After that the I category means bigger inclusions and can be seen by the naked eye under 10 x magnification.
A diamond can divide light into a spectrum of colours. Diamonds with no hint of colour are very rare, and called colourless. The colour grading ranges from totally colourless to fancy yellow. The colourless diamonds such as D, E and F are normally more expensive than diamonds normally graded to the bottom. Near Colourless diamonds G, H, I & J are less expensive than totally colourless diamonds. Diamonds graded from K to R ranges from faint yellow to yellow, while S to Z are dark yellow and mounted stones appear yellow. The most convenient method of judging the colour of loose polished diamonds is in daylight is that traditionally used by diamond sorters.
The only equipment is a piece of white paper a special light if sunlight can not be used and a colour sample set to compare.
Exceptions are natural colour diamonds such as blue, pink, green, red, black etc.
TANZANITES: It is one of the worlds rarest gemstones coming from the only source at the foothills of Kilimanjaro and not many years of supply left.
BUYING TANZANITE: It is important when buying Tanzanite to go to a respectable jeweller. In a similar way comparing with Diamonds there are also 5 Cs for grading Tanzanite Colour, Clarity, Cut, Carat and Confidence. The higher the combination of these characteristics, the rarer and more valuable the stone. What is important when buying a Tanzanite. Make sure you know more about Tanzanites and how the Tanzanite Scale works. The Tanzanite Scale according to the Tanzanite Foundation is the only internationally recognized system for grading Tanzanites.
It works basically the same way as the Diamonds Internationally Grading System except for the 5th C that is also important for buying diamonds.
COLOUR: Colour refers to the blue in Tanzanite and its degree of violet saturation. The deeper the colour the, more valuable the stone.
CLARITY: Tanzanite varies from internally flawless to heavily included.
CUT: The way the stone is been cut is very important. Whether the stone is a fine cut which will influences the light reflection which will
determine the absolute maximum light reflection. So if the stones cut is a fine cut it will have an excellence light reflection or good brilliance.
CARAT: Carat is being used to determine the weight of the stone. One carat is equal to 100 points and is equal to a 1/5th of a gram.
CONFIDENCE: Make sure when buying a Tanzanite it must be from a reputable jeweller or supplier.
LOOKING AFTER YOUR TANZANITE JEWELLERY: Keep all Tanzanite jewellery separate from other jewellery. Use soft material pouches or individual pockets. When cleaning Tanzanite jewellery clean it by soaking it in lukewarm slightly soapy water. Avoid wearing
Tanzanite during rigorous activity. Tanzanite compared to diamonds hardness is much lower on the hardness scale.
Looking After and Cleaning Jewellery
Jewellery cleaner can be used on most pieces. But if you are in doubt ask your Jeweller. (Remember some jewellery like pearls has its own cleaning solution the normal solution will damage your pearls).
Jewellery can be cleaned at home by using a small bowl of luke-warm water with a small amount of dishwashing liquid and a soft tooth brush.
Rinse it in clean luke-warm water and pat it dry with a soft cloth or tissue paper.
Diamonds luster or sparkle can be influenced by grease or hand cream and must be cleaned on regular bases.
Pearls should be stored in a pouch or soft cloth.
To clean, simply wipe them with a soft damp cloth and avoid perfume and hairspray.
Avoid wearing pearls on a very hot day.
Take your pearls to your Jeweller to be restrung once a year and to be cleaned properly if wearing it on a regular base.
• Take your precious jewellery for valuations and inspection at least once a year.
• Avoid wearing gold jewellery while swimming or spending time in a Jacuzzi. Chlorine can damage your jewellery.
• Do not wear your water resistant watch when taking a hot shower or bath because one can damage the gaskets
and it will no longer be water resistant.
